Benign tumor
Benign tumors are non-cancerous growths that can still cause harm.
A benign tumor is a mass of cells that does not invade neighboring tissue or metastasize. Compared to malignant tumors, benign tumors generally have a slower growth rate and relatively well differentiated cells. They are often surrounded by a fibrous sheath or contained within the epithelium. Common examples include moles and uterine fibroids. While the word 'benign' means favorable, a benign tumor is not benign in the usual sense; the name merely specifies that it is not cancerous. Benign tumors usually do not pose a serious health risk, but they can be harmful or fatal, especially if they cause a mass effect that compresses neighboring tissues, leading to nerve damage, ischemia, necrosis, or organ damage.
